There are different paths a skater can take from recreational to competitive. It helps to clearly define what path we are on to best set goals and expectations.

In figure skating, there are 3 avenues to take with certain adjustments that can be made in either direction based on time availability. All will help develop healthy lifestyle, discipline and some can even lead to successful careers in the sport.

The Recreational Skater

  • Skates once or twice per week

  • One private lesson per week

  • Possible taking learn to skate classes

Goals:

Have fun!

Expectations:

Have fun!

Possibilities:

A lifelong love of a healthy sport and great fitness

The Test Oriented Skater

  • Skates 3 times per week

  • One or two private lessons per week

  • Attends off ice class

  • Actively practices

Goals:

To pass USFS tests, possibly compete, have fun

Expectations:

Attend lessons, practice, test, have fun!

Possibilities:

Become a coach, judge or official in the sport you love…

The Competitive Skater

  • Skates 5 to 6 times per week

  • 3 to 5 private lessons per week

  • 2 to 3 off ice sessions per week

  • Ballet/dance/flexibility training

  • Actively practices

Goals:

To pass USFS tests in order to compete to qualify for National and International Competition

Expectations:

Devotion to success through attendance, hard work, and perseverance.
Test and compete to do your best.
Good sportsmanship and teamwork.
Have fun!
